When you think of where to go on a hot summer evening to enjoy some music, maybe a little dancing, toss back some beverages all in a comfortable but elegant environment, you may not realize that Knoxville’s Museum of Art fits the bill perfectly. Every Friday evening the KMA hosts a band, serves up some nosh, has a few cash bars and let’s you kick up your heels to start the weekend all for a little chump change. This summer’s line up is chock full of southern soul with swing bands, bluegrass, acoustic Americana, R&B and the like. Each week is different so make sure and check out the line up at the beginning of the month!
You may recognize a few local bands that celebrate their release parties here, but the KMA also hosts bands from other parts of the south as well. Coming up on August 10th they welcome the Little BIG Band, described as “a swing band with its own distinctive sound, plus the skill and versatility to play for many different audiences – from the swing kids who love the fast dances like the jitterbug, the lindy, and the shag – to the polished ballroom dancers who love the vintage dance music made famous by the big bands. With a music library includes nearly 300 songs from the Big Band era, the Little Big Band provides the perfect blend of classic swing from the great song writers like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington.”.
What to expect: A live musical performance in a in a “casually elegant atmosphere”, enjoy grazing on nosh, drinking (2 cash bars available) & mingling with art & music lovers. Great for a date night or family outing.
Where it will be: Knoxville Museum of Art, Friday’s from 6:00-8:30 pm.
What to bring: Besides your love of the arts you only need a little cash. Parking is plentiful and free, bring $10 for General Admission, $6 with Membership or student ID and it is free for folks 17 and under.
While you are there you might check out some of the talented artists that are also featured and consider becoming a museum member. I don’t know about you but it sounds like a fun way to swing into the dog days of summer!
