All the world’s a stage and Shakespeare on the Square is the July event not to be missed! This annual Knoxville tradition kicks off Thursday, July 12th in Market Square. Just so you hungry theater goers don’t get bored, the Tennessee Stage Company mixes it up and they present two plays which alternate evenings Thursday through Sunday for five weeks. The unique thing about this family friendly Knoxville theater event is that it happens outside under the evening sky on Market Square. Bring along a blanket or lawn chair to set up on the square, or this year you can reserve seating in the VIP section at $15 per person complete with a covered tent, chairs and a cool bottle of water. While the general admission seats do not have a cost, the company does ask for a suggested donation of $5 per person (and they take credit cards now in case you don’t have cash!).
This year the professional theater company, Tennessee Stage Company, will be producing two plays, As You Like It and Julius Caesar. As You Like It is a comedy piece that they describe as “(Shakespeare’s) nod to the Robin Hood legends…. set in an enchanting forest, with some of Shakespeare’s funniest clowns, sweetest songs and an Elizabethan version of the World Wrestling Federation. As You Like It is a marvelous entertainment for the entire family.” Get ready for some good laughs indeed!
I think we are all familiar with the infamous phrase “Et tu, Brute” immortalized by Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar. Come watch the performance described as “Shakespeare’s great political tragedy about power, assassination and civil war, is as current as the headlines from the Middle East“. Afterwards you will feel not only more cultured, but you will leave better able to spot a good assassination plot when you see one!
What to expect: A live Tragedy or Comedy play by the one of the worlds greatest playwrights!!
Where it will be: Market Square, July 12th-August 12th, 7pm Thursday-Sunday evenings. Cash or credit card donations accepted.
What to bring: A lawn chair or reserve your VIP in advance, bottle of water, a fan, sunglasses, and mosquito repellent (killing mosquitoes is no tragedy)
