Island Home

Even though it is called Island Home it is not exactly on an island.   Rather this historic nabe sits near the Tennessee River and like many of Knoxville’s suburbs, Island Home, in the south of Knoxville began as a farm and later was developed as a streetcar suburb (similar to Fourth & Gill and Parkridge) in the early 1900′s. With the city’s highest concentration of Craftsman/Bungalow style homes, and a beautiful traditional boulevard lined with old hardwoods, the area retains the charm of yesteryear.  The nabe is just a few miles to the Gay St Bridge and Downtown Knoxville as well as the University of Tennessee.  Many residents enjoy the area because of the proximity to downtown Knoxville shopping and amenities as well as the surrounding Ijams Nature Center and access to the larger area of South Knoxville.

The main thoroughfare is Island Home Boulevard, and along with Spence Place and Fisher Place it has the oldest homes in the neighborhood of varying styles such as Craftsman, Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival.  Several dozen properties in Island Home were added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Island Home Park Historic District in 1994.  Adjacent to Island Home is the Tennessee School for the Deaf and the Knoxville Downtown Island Home Airport which developed in the 1920′s and 1930′s respectively.  Island Home has a very active neighborhood association, a neighborhood park and community events.
